A star or galaxy moving away from us will look more red than it would if the source is not moving corresponding to our reference frame. When an light emitting object moving apart very fast, the wavelength of the light emitted gets stretched out making its frequency range towards the red end of the electromagnetic spectrum. From there it gets it name as “redshift”.
Whereas a light emitting object like stars or
galaxy is moving towards us, the frequency of the light emitted gets
squeezed together a little bit making it look more blue than it
normally does, because of the shortening of its wavelengths along
with the increasing in its frequencies. This is called blue shift but
as it is opposite to the concept of redshift, it also known as the
“negative redshift”.
